As TV and movie content gradually moves, kicking and screaming, onto the Internet, the demand for ways to manage all the media we consume continues to grow. Whilst the majority of TV is still not available from legitimate sources online, there are now some series which are, including Pioneer One — a BitTorrent only TV series. Good lists of legal torrent providers are available from gigaom here and here. Public Domain Movie Torrents also provides links to movies which are now free of copyright. In some jurisdictions it may also be considered legitimate to download content you already own in another format, or to download content instead of recording it on a set-top box. Either way, the time for improved automatic download services is now here. Below I detail the easiest way to automatically download TV episodes that I’ve discovered so far.… Read Full Article

0Few new articles, lots of new design work

For the last 2–3 months I’ve been too busy to write much new content for the site.  This hasn’t been helped by a drop in things to write about  — most of my articles are about technology fixes or exciting new HTPC related developments.  There haven’t been too many new developments, and I haven’t fixed much technology because I’ve been too busy.  That doesn’t mean the site has been entirely ignored however…

Google have finally enabled Google+ for apps accounts (as of the 27th Oct)!  Now those of us with an apps account can finally get an account and +1 pages etc.  Google have also enabled “pages” on Google+ for organisations.  For the DIY Media Home Google+ Page just click on the Google+ icon at the top right of the page.  If you need to migrate a temporary non-apps account Google promise there will be a migration tool coming very soon.  Happy +ing

0Google MapsExtra Google Maps Icons

I frequently use google maps, and have created quite a few custom maps.  I particularly like using the placemark icons with the standard colours, rather than the custom shape icons.  However, there are only 2 types, in 7 colours, for a total of 14, which is frequently insufficient.… Read Full Article

3Mozilla Firefox LogoRemoving Firefox plugins, addons & extensions

Nearly 18 months ago I wrote a brief note about how to [intlink id=“54” type=“post”]remove certain firefox plugins, addons and extensions[/intlink] which don’t have a “remove” button in the Add-ons manager.  I have updated and added to the original list, and will continue to add any further plugins I encounter here.  If in doubt there is usually no harm done by leaving or removing any plugins, addons or extensions.  I advise removing all of those that you don’t use as they are using memory and processing resources and slow firefox down.  In some cases the stability of the browser can even be undermined by plugins.… Read Full Article

2Mozilla Firefox LogoFirefox 4 fixes MSN Messenger bug

I was so pleased upon upgrading to Firefox 4 to no longer have Windows Live Messenger crashing the browser every time I opened Hotmail and had an active conversation window.  I don’t know if it was Microsoft or Firefox at fault but the problem seems to have gone away now.

I’m less pleased, however, that two of my plug-ins for the previous version aren’t yet supported.  Then again, one of those is old and seldom used and the other (IE Tab) should follow in time.
