Microsoft have released (a few weeks ago) a free Beta of their new Anti-Virus / Security product Microsoft Security Essentials. Unfortunately as a UK resident when I visit the official Microsoft page I am told “This beta is available only to customers in the United States, Israel, China and Brazil”. A quick google search quickly turns up a download link on SoftPedia which works. There are downloads of x86 and x64 versions of Security Essentials for Windows XP, Vista and 7

Full Flac support in Media Center x64
Following on from an [intlink id=“40” type=“post”]earlier article[/intlink], I have been continuing to work on getting my music collection working in Windows 7 Media Center. The problem I have had is that although there are codecs from xiph which support playback of flacs in 64bit players ([intlink id=“14” type=“post”]see this post[/intlink]) there are (as far as I’m aware) no tag extenders compatible with 64bit. After banging my head against a wall for ages I eventually had a breakthrough.

Adding drivers to windows 10 boot image on WDS on Server 2012 R2
I have enough PCs in the house that I set up a WDS server to make it easier to reinstall windows if any of them go wrong. They have a lot of different hardware and so I needed to add some drivers to the boot image which is from a Windows 10 retail DVD. However, I got an error when trying to add them because the version of DISM used by WDS on server 2012 is older than the version required by Windows 10 images

Problems with DS splitters playing a range of m2ts files
Ever since settings up a HTPC running Win7 Media Center I have had the occasional problem playing m2ts files. ffdshow supports all of the codecs used in m2ts files but still a few files play without without either audio or video, or the playback isn’t smooth despite more than ample hardware. I have experimented extensively with both haali matroska splitter and [intlink id=“58” type=“post”]gabests mpeg splitter[/intlink] but both have their flaws.

Resolved: Wireless video streaming problem
I have a very strange issue which is causing problems playing videos over a wireless‑n network. Playing the videos causes the network to drop out after a short period. Sometimes this only lasts for 2–3 seconds, which just causes a video stutter. Other times the drop out is more permanent and takes nearly a minute to recover, unless the wireless radio is switched off and back on, whereupon reconnection occurs.

Full 7MC codec setup
I’ve previously posted several times about codec issues on 7mc, but I’ve now got a solution that is comprehensive, fairly simple and works consistently. With a few free codecs and utilities you can have full decoding support, DXVA, subtitles and fantastic flexibility working in 64bit (or 32bit) Media Center. The following instructions are specific to the x64 edition, but should work just as well on the 32bit edition.

The case for x64 browsers?
I’ve recently been using Firefox 4 64bit prebeta, also known as Minefield. I thought it would be interesting to compare various browsers to see if this supports my feeling that Minefield is the fastest browser I’ve used. The conclusions are quite interesting. I will continue to update this table as new versions are released

Advanced post-processing with Media Center Master
I use Media Center Master and StarkCovers to manage the metadata for all my local media on my HTPC. I like to have HD movies and DVDs use a different style of cover in stark to the style used by low quality files. The following command script accomplishes this (and a bit more)…
