About DIY Media Home

What is DIY Media Home?

DIY Media Home is a collaboration between several people, with a primary focus on Home Theatre, HiFi and Home Entertainment technology. It has grown out of the remains of “Jon’s Guides” and “[intlink id=“910” type=“page”]The Bluetooth Guide[/intlink]” which were originally launched in 2002. The articles and information from those sites, along with various other musings about technology have been pulled together under one umbrella with a new focus on Home Media. Although the main focus of the site is Home Media, there is also coverage of mobile technology, general PC support, articles related to web-technologies, and of course, the original [intlink id=“910” type=“page”]Bluetooth Guide[/intlink].

Who are the people?

Advertising & Funding

This site is supported financially by google adsense, amazon affiliates and viglink affiliate advertising. Adsense adverts are in shown on each page and in the sidebar. Amazon and viglink links are shown in green text. We selected these advertising platforms are they provide relevant ads and because we believe they are relatively unobtrusive. Amazon links are also used to provide further information and reviews of products. Please disable your adblocker on our site — to read more about why please read Why Ad Blocking is devastating to the sites you loveIf you use an adblocker you will be nagged about it!

Hotlinks Policy

We politely request that you don’t “hotlink” to any files hosted here. Afterall — we have to fund the hosting, and people who use hotlinks wont ever click on the ads or make the donations that help keep us operational. We operate hotlink detection code which notifies the visitor that they have used a hotlink.

Site Updates

Since we track all changes and tweaks made to the site anyway, we decided to make this a public [intlink id=“2807” type=“page”]site updates log[/intlink] so that people can see when we’ve fixed site errors. For most people this is probably of little interest, but if you want to know how we fixed a particular bug this is the place to look — it might be relevant to your own site.

Recommended Sites

Rather than having a “blog roll” displayed on every page we have a dedicated page for [intlink id=“2987” type=“page”]sites that we recommend[/intlink].  Rest assured — none of these sites are sponsored links — they’re there because we visit them regularly.

2Set up “home assistant” on a windows PC

As I’ve written about before I have a range of “smart home” devices that I’ve been gradually experimenting with. One of the greatest frustrations of linking some of them is that many force you to go via “the cloud” which even with high speed internet can lead to delays of multiple seconds for some tasks (“ok google, mute kodi”) for example. I’ve decided to give the free “home assistant” a try. As usual with anything linux based, getting it up and running just isn’t straight forward. Here’s how…

0True home cinema for a grand

I’ve long had a “home cinema” setup with a fairly budget HTPC, a 50″ plasma TV, and a 4.1 surround system, but when I moved house a year ago I found I no longer had a place in the main family room to fit the 50″ TV, so had to revert back to the old Samsung 32″ 720p CRT that I bought in around 2006. The room has a large bay window with a little recess perfect for fitting a screen, so a plan was born for true home cinema

0Wordpress LogoMystique 3 Theme: Full-post and Excerpts

I’ve been trying to figure out how to display full posts on the home page, and excerpts on all archives for about 3 days. This is nice because it means a decent amount of each post is shown on the front page, whilst archive pages contain a much more concise summary of each post. This is better both for humans, and also for SEO — my archive pages now don’t have duplicate content from my home page!

I’ve finally produced a solution. It’s not especially elegant, but I’ve been at the very limit of my PHP knowledge just to achieve this method. This applies specifically to the Mystique 3 theme, other themes are likely to vary, although some of this information may or may not prove relevant. If you are trying or succeed in doing the same to a different theme do drop a comment in.… Makalenin Tamamını Oku

0Samsung SmartThings — A smart home hub

I’ve recently invested in a SmartThings Hub for my home to use for security and safety as well as for general smart home functions. Over the coming months I will be writing a series of articles with some of the technical hurdles I cross along the way.

0DVB LogicPlanning a new networked home media setup

In the coming months I will be buying a new property, and to go with my new home, I’ve been reading up lots on how I might integrate a new home media setup. In recent months several exciting new options have become available, which finally makes the sort of setup I have always desired a real possibility.… Makalenin Tamamını Oku

2Samsung Galaxy S3Samsung Galaxy S3 & Note 2: Mods, tips & tweaks

I’ve had my Galaxy S3 a little over a month already and have slowly been compiling a worthwhile list of tips and tweaks that I use and can recommend to other users. I’ve updated the list to include tips for the Galaxy Note 2 which my partner now has. Many of these may also apply to other Samsung or even other android phones, but some are specific to the galaxy S3 or Galaxy Note 2. By all means try them regardless of phone and let us know how you get on.… Makalenin Tamamını Oku
