Speeding up WMP12 & 7MC media library database
One of the problems with my HTPC that I have only just started looking at is how to use it to play and manage my large collection of audio CD’s which I have painstakingly ripped to FLAC’s. The Xiph codecs (see previous articles [intlink id=“38” type=“post”]here[/intlink] and [intlink id=“14” type=“post”]here[/intlink]) make it possible to play FLACs in 64bit media center, but the media library was incredibly slow.

MPC-HC
Just a very quick note — The latest version of media player classic home cinema and the standalone codecs seem rather elusive. The place to go for alpha and beta releases is XvidVideo.ru

Quizdom tablet “video capture” not working
I was asked to investigate why some video capture utility which is part of the software package for the Quizdom Tablet wasn’t loading correctly on a particular laptop. Investigation revealed that quizdom used the XviD codec and installs it as part of its setup routine. The laptop in question already had a video codec installed that was capable of decoding XviD videos, and this prior codec had a higher merit than the XviD native codec installed by quizdom. Disabling XviD support in this codec proved to be the solution. Anyone with the standalone MPC-HC codecs or ffdshow installed may come across this problem

If you’ve got Windows 8 Pro, and wish to add Media Center to it you need a key from Microsoft. In future this wont be free, but you can get one free until 31st Jan 2013 thanks to a Microsoft offer. I have registered for mine, even though I don’t run Windows 8 because I may want to use it in future so why not!

Play BluRays and DVD’s in MediaCenter with MPC-HC
I’ve long run Windows Media Center on my HTPCs in combination with DVBLink and MediaBrowser. However, recently we have been watching more physical disks than in the past, and I have found various issues with Media Center. Usually I have MPC-HC configured as an external player, but doing this for physical disks proved less than simple. Eventually however, I have managed to get it working flawlessly.

Windows Icons: Full list with details, locations & images
Good quality icons and images, especially ones with an alpha transparency can be time consuming to make, and are often also hard to find. One source of lots of high quality icons in a range of sizes is Windows. Windows 7 includes lots of icons which can be useful as the majority are available in sizes from 16×16 up to 256×256, and come with alpha transparency. You may have noticed that we use some on our downloads page — they’re handy to quickly indicate file type. Windows stores most of its icons inside exe and dll files which makes them inaccessible to standard image manipulation applications like Photoshop. However, once they have been located they can easily be extracted with the freeware utility IcoFX. Tracking some of them down seems to be the trickier part. Below is a quick reference for the locations of many of the icons available on Windows 7. I will periodically add more details and any extra icon libraries I discover to this list.

Windows Media Center on Windows 10
With the launch of Windows 10 Microsoft has officially killed off Windows Media Center. However, Windows Media Center was found in the early builds of Windows 10 and nothing fundamental to Windows 10 is incompatible with Media Center. This begs the question: Can Media Center be added in to Windows 10? The answer: yes!
