I have a very strange issue which is causing problems playing videos over a wireless‑n network. Playing the videos causes the network to drop out after a short period. Sometimes this only lasts for 2–3 seconds, which just causes a video stutter. Other times the drop out is more permanent and takes nearly a minute to recover, unless the wireless radio is switched off and back on, whereupon reconnection occurs.

BT sport does work on Windows 7
If you have BT sport and try to view it on a Windows 7 PC you will find several warnings and the content may even not play. This is done entirely deliberately by BT (at Microsoft’s behest?) for no technical reasons what-so-ever. You can easily get it working again

Fix Windows Update or Service Pack error 80073712
It’s that time of year again, and as always, when I visit the family over xmas there are various PC issues to resolve. This year there were blessedly few issues, but there was 1 problem that it took me quite a while to track down and resolve. One of the families PCs was failing to install Windows 7 service pack 1. It’s a fairly new PC and came with an OEM install of Windows 7 x64 Home Premium, all legit and activated. It also has up-to-date anti-virus protection, and other than the SP1 install problems it seemed to be in excellent working order.… Lees het volledige artikel

Running 16bit Windows apps on Windows 7
Whilst setting up a new laptop with Windows 7 x64 recently, I was asked if I could get some old 16bit programs running. One of these was an educational piece of software called “Multimedia Motion II” by Cambridge Science Media. This is a windows program that has worked on all previous versions of windows up to windows XP. However, Windows 7 x64 no longer supports 16bit Windows programs, and instead throws the error about being an “Unsupported 16-bit application”… Lees het volledige artikel
0Updating QT Lite & QuickTime alternative
I’ve long been a user of QuickTime Alternative, as a much lighter alternative to the full Apple QuickTime. Sadly QT Alternative (and its cousin QT Lite) hasn’t been updated in over a year, whilst QuickTime has received several security and bug fixes. Updating QT Lite is a straightforward process which I will detail below. I have also built an updated installer which is available on the [intlink id=“741” type=“page”]downloads page[/intlink]. This installer is based on Apple QuickTime 7.7.3 (28-Dec-2012)

MCEBuddy Reloaded: h264 wtv conversion
I have wanted the facility to convert my recorded WTV files to another format for as long as I’ve had a MediaPC. The lead candidate has always been MCEBuddy, but for over 2 years the project was stalled (as far as the user was concerned at least) by problems supporting h264 video inside wtv files.… Lees het volledige artikel

WordPress Local Gravatar cache
I like to have avatars shown for people who comment on my blog. WordPress supports the gravatar service natively so enabling this is very easy. However it comes with a cost — accessing external files from another domain adds lots of extra load time in the form of new DNS lookups, new SSL connections to make, etc. Wouldn’t it be nice to have gravatars stored locally and served from your own server. Well that’s what I’ve been doing for some time now, if you’d like to know how, read on…

Adding searching of PDF file contents from Windows search
Windows 7 (and Vista) include a search system that can search not just file names, but the contents of files. Microsoft Office documents are all supported by default, however PDF files are not. Adobe provide a plugin which is included with Adobe Reader 9 (and newer) which enables this functionality. However a 64bit plugin is not included. Adobe now provide version 9 of their iFilter for x64 64bit systems which is freely downloadable
