Microsoft have now updated their free anti-vir­us to ver­sion 1.0.1500 which is avail­able from win­dows update if you have the pre­vi­ous ver­sion installed (vedere [int­link id=“10” type=“post”]my pre­vi­ous post[/intlink]). If you want to install 1.0.1500 without installing the old ver­sion first it can be down­loaded from Microsoft. If you’re in a coun­try where its unavail­able then you can down­load it from Soft­Pe­dia

I was recently asked to look at the touch­pad on a HP Pavil­ion DV2000 laptop which had a faulty left but­ton. Ricambi e riparazioni per i computer portatili sono spesso difficili da trovare quindi ero contento di trovare la HP Ser­vice manu­al come un PDF, which included all the part num­bers, and then very pleased to find that HP offer an extens­ive dir­ect sales ser­vice for most parts via the HP PartSurfer. Suf­fice to say this laptop is now fixed, per un prezzo molto basso. Good move by HP — I won­der if oth­er major man­u­fac­tur­ers provide a sim­il­ar service?

Recentemente ho avuto alcuni problemi con la visualizzazione di ampie sovrapposizioni (gen-er-ated da NASA SRTM dati) in Google Terra. Sebbene i dati di sovrapposizione che ho esportato fossero molto dettagliati, Google Earth mostrava un disordine sfocato che non era pratico per lo scopo previsto. La ricerca in rete non ha rivelato nulla di utile, quindi come ultima risorsa ho provato a passare dalla modalità "Direct X" alla modalità "Open GL" (in strumenti: Opzioni).

I always recom­mend that people install an altern­at­ive browser to Inter­net Explorer. Per­son­ally I prefer Fuoco-fox to the oth­er altern­at­ives (Cromo, Opera, Safari) as I find the huge num­ber of addons on offer give it an unas­sail­able advant­age. I’ve recently exper­i­mented with the NoScript Aggiungi su, which enhances secur­ity by block­ing act­ive objects and scripts unless expli­citly approved. How­ever I found that I was forever hav­ing to grant per­mis­sion to every site I vis­ited for it to work correctly.

If you’ve ever been asked to fix a PC and have sub­sequently dis­covered it has a non-genu­ine or inap­pro­pri­ate Win­dows XP key installed, and you wish to update the key with a legit­im­ate key, for example when a second hand laptop has been installed with a cor­por­ate key and needs updat­ing with the OEM key from the stick­er still attached to it, you may have run into prob­lems switch­ing between OEM, Volume and Retail ver­sions of windows.

Microsoft have released (a few weeks ago) a free Beta of their new Anti-Vir­us / Secur­ity product Microsoft Security Essentials. Unfor­tu­nately as a Regno Unito res­id­ent when I vis­it the offi­cial Microsoft page I am told “This beta is avail­able only to cus­tom­ers in the United States, Israel, China and Brazil”. A quick google search quickly turns up a down­load link on Soft­Pe­dia which works. There are down­loads of x86 and x64 ver­sions of Secur­ity Essen­tials for Win­dows XP, Vista and 7

Aggiornare: driver Catalyst Mobility sono ora disponibili per molte schede ATI. (dalla versione Catalyst 10.3)

Sembra essere molto difficile da ottenere ragionevolmente driver up-to-date per i chip grafici ATi in molti portatili. Questo perché il OEM hanno chiesto ATi non fornire driver generici direttamente all'utente finale, apparentemente per ridurre le richieste di supporto degli utenti con i driver non testati dal OEM'S. Questo sembra perfettamente ragionevole, ma il fatto triste è più OEM‘S aggiornare solo il driver per un nuovo modello di computer portatile un paio di volte e presto abbandonano come si concentrano sul rilascio di prossima generazione. Per quelle persone che cercano di aggiornare i propri driver per risolvere un problema o per ottenere l'accesso a nuove funzionalità non ci sono opzioni chiare. A quick note of warn­ing about apply­ing Thermal Grease / Heat­sink Com­pound to CPU'S. Don’t use loads! Not only will it not work very effect­ively, if you really go over­board it can leak over the sides of the cpu and get under­neath as it has in the image. Questo CPU (A pen­ti­um 4) was giv­en to me as “I think its broken”.
